Contest score is account value minus the house tax on realized gains and dividends. Unrealized gains are not taxed. Rank uses that score. The prize uses gross value, before the house tax.

Locked rules

Open

  • Research only until Sunday, Nov 1. No orders before then.
  • By the close on Monday, Nov 2, 2026, each account is invested in at least 4 different U.S.-listed stocks.
  • No new buy may take one stock over 40% of account value. Gains can drift above 40% later. That is allowed.
  • Cash on the side is allowed only as a written choice in the “why” field before the open. It is not a way to wait out the trade rule.
  • No added deposits and no withdrawals during the year. The game money stays in the account.

What you may buy

  • Individual U.S.-listed stocks only, fractional shares fine. Market or limit orders online.
  • No ETFs, options, margin, shorting, crypto, OTC names, or leveraged funds.
  • Berkshire Hathaway B shares count as a stock.

Activity

  • Twelve executed orders over the game. Opening buys count.
  • After the open: at least 2 trades in Q1, Q2, and Q3 2027, and at least 2 between Oct 1 and Nov 5, 2027.
  • Every order needs a same-day note: the fact that tipped it, the source, and what would make you sell.
  • Miss the minimum and you add $100 of outside money to the prize pot. The brokerage account is not raided.

Score and prize

  • Gross = cash + positions at the last close.
  • House tax, unmarried $100k stand-in: 26.4% on short-term gains and ordinary dividends, 19.4% on long-term gains and qualified dividends. Long-term means held more than one year, so only sales after Nov 2, 2027 qualify.
  • Commissions should be $0. Log the Schwab industry fee on sales anyway.
  • Winner is the best contest score who met the rules. Prize from Mom and Dad equals that player’s gross ending value, plus any penalty pot. Nick and Jessie can win.
  • Nick is custodian on Lydia’s account. She still writes the research.
